KEY ACTIVITIES - CRISIS UNITS

Conditions of Accessing

Adults aged 18 years and older who have a mental illness (and in special circumstances 16 – 18 years), particularly people marginalised from mainstream services including people experiencing homelessness, aboriginal and people from diverse cultural backgrounds are eligible to be referred to the units for accommodation

For a person to be accepted into the unit they must have -

(a)

been referred by a recognised health service, eg., hospitals, community mental health team members, who have provided treatment to a person diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder;

(b)

a referral form completed by the referring agency.

(c)

a nominated Case Manager who provides the clinical supervision and support to the individual while they are a resident of the unit.

(d)

a resident's case worker who will be responsible to provide -
 

any clinical care which is required, i.e. injections, arranging prescriptions or doctors appointments;
 

assistance to the person in finding suitable long-term accommodation.

Services Provided

Crisis / Respite Accommodation
The provision of accommodation for up to eight – twelve weeks for people who are experiencing a crisis, have a mental illness and who require ongoing clinical support.
The accommodation is provided in three pairs of duplexes owned by the Department of Housing and Works and leased by the House and which are located close to the mental health services in Bentley, Midland and Rockingham/Kwinana.

The Rockingham/Kwinana crisis unit extends the stay for residents for up to six months.
Each facility has six single rooms and is staffed for 24 hours / 7 days a week. Residents are assisted with daily living activities. Close contact is maintained with mental health service clinical staff through caseworkers and accommodation officers.

Reduced rates for residents who are paying rent elsewhere in the community. ie Paying rent to Homeswest, a hostel or to a private landlord or paying a mortgage. Limit of 2 weeks applies.
